Our friends Jean and Austin came over to see us in their Riley. it looked really nice parked in front of our house so I asked if I could take a photo of it , and here it is and what he told me about it . .
At the conclusion of World War 2 Britain was in a sorry state with food rationing, fuel shortages and few materials available to restart manufacture. "Export or Die" was the slogan of the day and motor manufacturers had to be committed to exports if valuable steel was to be used.
The Riley Roadster was a bold attempt to sell into the American market. 500 cars were built but few actually sold there. Post war american cars had become quite advanced and the Riley was perceived as "old fashioned". However other countries took to the Roadster and some were sold in Britain. About 100 Roadsters still survive - a poignant reminder of post war Britain during the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
Wow--this is gorgeous. I wonder if they made these available now, how well they'd do? I'll bet they would sell--the cars they make these days are so boring (save for a few).
My gosh, you, me and Allison all had car shots...and this is some awesome car. Loved hearing the background about it too. Your friends are sure taking care of this "baby."
Nice shot, Diana! :)
