We visited the annual CanadianTulip Festival today. Our spring has been cool and damp so the blooms are a bit late this year, but it was still a scenic and enjoyable day! I have some nice photos but this one caught my eye because it appears that the tulip is full of molten gold. And maybe in a way it is! It is said that this is the largest tulip festival in the world, with over 1 million tulips on display and hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world. Here's a copy/paste from the Canadian Tulip Festival website, to give you an idea of the history of the Festival:
"In the fall of 1945, Princess Juliana of the Netherlands presented Ottawa with 100,000 tulip bulbs. The gift was given in appreciation of the safe haven that members of Holland’s exiled royal family received during the World War II in Ottawa and in recognition of the role which Canadian troops played in the liberation of the Netherlands."
The site goes on to talk about the birth of a Dutch Princess in Canada. "The only royal baby ever born in North America, her birth created a living bond between the people of Canada and the Netherlands. To ensure the baby’s Dutch citizenship, the Canadian government temporarily ceded a room at the Ottawa Civic Hospital to the Netherlands." Gorgeous! Only made it to the Festival once, but the tulips were nearly finished and the weather wasn't great. Nice to experience it through your lens!
