Friends of ours regularly put food out for the deer and the deer are kind enough to share it with the wild turkeys. Among the flock of turkeys is one who is much lighter in colour [leucistic, a condition with reduced pigmentation]. I hope to get back there before the end of winter to get a closer shot. The blue in the back ground is the nylon netting from the feed bags and although it detracts from the turkeys, it shows the pic is not b&w, rather just our normal dreary winter grey look. This is one of those pics that gets posted to capture the memory, not celebrate great photography! lol
We had 2 white turkeys come to visit our neighborhood back around Thanksgiving & I posted a couple photos on 365. They look about the same as yours except yours have more markings. I heard our turkeys were since moved to a bird sanctuary or some sort of attraction south of Orlando. Cool shot and would love to see more!
An interesting-looking turkey for sure, and a nice capture. I do wish, however, that your friends would look more closely at the wisdom of feeding deer; it's not wise at all, in the grand scope of things.
@aikimomm yes, now that you mention it, I remember hearing that. Among other things, they don't digest food the same in winter as they do in summer. I'll have to mention that to her. Along the same lines, it's worth mentioning too, for those reading this that it's not safe to feed bread to the birds. Thanks so much for commenting and for your continued support. It's much appreciated.
@aikimomm and everyone, here's a link to an article about the feeding of deer: It's by the Province of Nova Scotia but would apply to other provinces and states too, I'm sure. Both the problems with feeding deer and some safe ways to help them are identified. http://www.gov.ns.ca/natr/wildlife/conserva/Feed-deer.asp
Beautiful composition, Anne. Love the colors of the lighter turkey .. that's really interesting. I know what you mean about the gray days. I don't need to process in b&w anymore. Nature does it for me!
I find shots like these just as interesting, and very informative. I enjoy seeing everyday life in other parts of the world. And I always wondered what wild turkeys look like!
Cool and I have a father in law who does this too. Feeds them big bags of corn but warning, that lured in the mtn lions and the neighbors cat was last seen in the lions jaw.
