New Bird by tara11

New Bird

I had 2 new birds at my feeder today. Yucky, rainy day, but this was the best I had with the time I had. Can anyone identify? It looks like a Finch, I think? It was slightly yellow. I didn't get a good look at it's back, but it had distinct black feathers on the ends of it's wings. The other bird was black and white - I hope he comes back.

This looks like a Goldfinch...maybe American Goldfinch because it has a bit of a brown tint?

Here's an American Goldfinch for comparison: http://365project.org/vskolnik/365/2012-11-14
and a Lesser Goldfinch: http://365project.org/vskolnik/365/2012-12-06

@vskolnik I think you're right Vee - an American goldfinch. I had no idea that they changed plumage in the winter. I love learning new things. This guy fit the bill for winter plumage - cool! Thanks so much!

My first thought was also Goldfinch. It could be a female, or an immature male. The second bird's description sounds like the male. Nice capture.

Nice capture Tara, I love the soft background colours.

It definitely has a finch beak but doesn't look like the type of goldfinch we have so I'm guessing it must be an American one. Love the grittiness and composition with the bird and feeder on the right xx

Looks like it's unanimous...American goldfinch...It probably won't take long until your feeder looks like this: http://365project.org/greyfeather/365/2013-01-14
