Urban Eagle's Nest I by timerskine

Urban Eagle's Nest I

About a month ago, the Missus and I were walking along the flood wall on the south bank of the James River, across from downtown Richmond, Virginia. This picture, taken today, is what I saw.

In the dead center of this shot is a high tension power line tower. You should be able to see that there's a big, dark something near the very top...an area that should be as open as the rest of the structure. It's sort of hard to see since the tower is, according to Google Maps, about 2,000 feet / 610 meters away.

I had a hunch that it might be an eagle's nest so I took some pictures and when I got home, I was able to zoom in on the shots I took and saw a bald eagle standing on the edge of a nest.

The Center for Conservation Biology at the College of William and Mary has an online eagle nest locator and this one wasn't on it. I reported it and they checked it out. They got back to me on March 2nd and told me that there were two chicks in the nest, about 7-10 days old!

I'm posting a close-up that I got from the same spot as this picture...but bear in mind that even with a long lens and a lot of cropping, I'm still over 1/3 of a mile away. It's called Urban Eagle's Nest II.
Very cool.

What a good camera and lens you have to capture the eagles nest from so far away. I had to look several times before I spotted the nest on this picture.
