Immediately after sunset today there was a three-planet conjunction. Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury were all with a few degrees of each other. The Missus and I went out to see it at our usual sunset viewing spot. We were blessed with great weather for it.
About 20 minutes after sunset we saw Jupiter. 10 minutes or so later we spotted them all. In this shot, Jupiter is the bright one at the top, Saturn is on the lower left (about 7:00 to Jupiter), and Mercury is on the lower right (across from and slightly below Saturn, and 4:00 to Jupiter).
This is the first time I've ever seen Mercury, despite being a skywatcher since I was a kid. Mercury is so close to the sun it takes certain alignments to catch it. It can be seen for only a few minutes before sunrise or after sunset, depending on how things line up. I was thrilled!
