Walked past Kevin, then said no, everyone was passing Kevin, one can see the shadows as they went by, there was only a few coins in his jar, so just had to go back. Introduced myself, asked his name,gave him a dollar and talked awhile, asked if it was ok if I took his picture he said sure !

Perhaps it could be considered "payment" for service (posing for your photo than a handout. It's very true that no one knows the troubles another has seen (to paraphrase an old folk tune).
