Youngest grandson went into an old hen house on Sunday and wouldn't come out inspite of his Mother's demands. Being deserted for several years, it was surrounded by grass and looked a perfect haven for snakes. From inside he wanted to discuss where snakes lived and how big were their teeth and other such questions of interest to a three year old. The episode reminded us of just how dangerous the shed was. So this morning we pulled it down and this is what we found! Needless to say, grandson's mother is having a "second melt down" today just thinking about what could have been.
The snake is an eastern brown snake and highly venomous. They are active during the day and like to eat mice, frogs, lizards and birds - all found living in this shed. Fortunately this snake would prefer to hide than attack but cornered in a shed who would know what it might do. Gg2 was a very lucky little boy.
ggggnhhh. Far too many bad memories of snakes hiding (lying in wait?) at our farm.
....and I also got a giggle - my weapon of choice is also a long-handled shovel (usually because there always seems to be one within arms reach)
Oh gosh, that just makes me shudder to think of your little grandson so near to this. They are such scary critters and it's just coming on to snake season now. This one was possibly still a bit sleepy from hibernation, fortunately.
