This Soldier Settler house was photographed in the late 1920s. Under the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act of 1917 the Australian Government offered portions of land to discharged soldiers and the widows of soldiers from the British Army after World War One. In 1921, fifty-eight portions were made available in the Boyne Valley. For a variety of reasons, the scheme was a dismal failure and most of the settlers left in a few short years. The owner of this “standard house” bought out two other settlers when they left. He joined their “standard houses” to his original dwelling and made the historic home we live in today.
