Koricancha

When the Spanish and Inca cultures collided one way the Spanish chose to show the dominance of their one God over those of the Inca was to build the Dominican Convent of Santo Domingo on top of the Inca’s Temple of the Sun at Koricancha. An earthquake in 1953 destroyed the Spanish complex while the Inca walls stood firm. (A fact proudly noted by our Peruvian guide.) The reconstruction of the Cathedral has allowed the jarring contrast between the exquisite work of the Inca and the coarser stonework of the baroque church to become evident. The grey walls on the right show the amazing skill of the Inca in constructing stone walls without mortar... an amazing and informative site to visit.
Beautiful stonework, love the arch and columns. beautiful vase as well.

The 1953 earthquake that destroyed the Santo Domingo church was a oh so subtle message from the Inca Inti God that it was displeased .. Both Jesus and Maria did not intervene and agreed that the church must go. Intihuana is supreme ... As Kennedy said in Berlin, "tear down this wall" - let my people go ... Ich bin ein Inca so to speak ... Get rid of the church .. The monks should pack their bags and leave as an act of Christian contrition.
