Isn't the internet amazing?
Driving home this afternoon, this sight brought back memories of Dad sitting on his milking stool in the dairy singing, "when the golden sun sinks in the hills...". I just had to stop. It was so long ago. I was just a child but I could see the image so clearly and the words kept rolling around in my head for the rest of the journey home and the half remembered tune teased me all through dinner. Now Google has located a recording of the song sung by Australian baritone, Peter Dawson in 1912. You can hear it here: http://www.firstworldwar.com/audio/littlegreyhomeinthewest.htm
I also found a very interesting post from Belgium involving the song. http://noviomagus.tripod.com/littlegreyhome.htm
I've had quite a nostalgic night and "My Little Grey Home in the West" is now on constant replay in my head and I can't find the Off switch!!!
What a great story and photo, Margaret. It can be annoying to get a song stuck in the head, but when it comes with a memory of a treasured time, it's worth it. Lovely.
