What's Going on Here?

This is the flower of the poisonous weed known as the castor oil plant. I had never noticed the flowers before. What was going on? A Google search revealed each flower spike contains male flowers (cream) at the bottom and female flowers(red) at the top. Spikey green seed pods develop each with three seeds inside. These can be expelled over 2 metres when the pod explodes.
