Yum

Am I thankful I got my watermelons in early. They are just what the doctor ordered on a hot day like today - 35 degrees yesterday in the kitchen and 37 expected today. A big slice of juicy melon straight from the fridge, you can't beat it in my book.
Yep, it's summer down under! Enjoy that big beauty. Love the play of light and shadow from the vines.

Beautiful shot. A great capture of the leaves and green colors.

Ooh lucky you - I can only imagine what a watermelon freshly ripened under an Australian sun tastes like!

@judithg when you don't have to grow a me on that can survive the bumping and rough and tumble of the marketing process you grow these. You leave them on the vine until they have a cracking hollowness when you tap them. Then when eventually the first cut is made you hear "Crack" and often as not the whole melon just splits open. Thats when you know you've hit the jackpot and start drooling while you wait for your slice of crisp, juicy sweetness...lol, I bought one before Christmas while I waited for mine to ripen and the vendor apologized and warned me that they had seeds. How soft we have become. What is a watermelon without seeds?

You described the process perfectly Margaret. That cracking sound when you stick the knife in and then the sight of the melon splitting open without being cut. Unfortunately, with just Rhoda and I, we rarely buy a whole melon these days - buy cut portions instead.
