Shhh!

Flying fox are sleeping. This colony of little reds have just moved into a camp on the side of the road to Gladstone. My son reported them last night as he drove home from work. He said the sky was just black with bats and he wondered where they were coming from. I found the answer today as we were coming home from Gladstone - a camp with several thousand in residence. No wonder the sky was black with them last night. The little red feasts on nectar so there must be a good food source nearby. The National Park across the Awoonga Dam from where they are now roosting was burnt out in the past few days. This may have been what displaced them. It is the mating season and the babies should begin to appear around April. This group seems very contented and not at all bothered by passing traffic.
An amazing sight Margaret.....they are so large too! We have different varieties of bats but ours are small. They are in the open air & daylight too!
