Though the fireflies alluded me in Japan, I had my chance tonight in my neighbor's yard. In between swatting away and slapping mosquitoes, I got some nice trails that I was hoping for.
I was thinking of trying this if they are back tomorrow night and wondered what settings you used. The Exif info doesn't include it. I love the way you've captured the light, still hinting at the grass, trees and sky.
@taffy it was tricky, I'm not going to lie - the conditions changed over the 15 minutes or so I was getting bit up, but ISO 125, shutter 1.3, F4. I also see that my white balance was really off balance at +3.7, which I didn't know until now...
Oh..you did! I have been meaning to do this and something always gets in my way....the weather, or we are out on a boat ride too late, or I have other shots I like that day... Did you have to use an ND filter at all? I worry that to leave the shutter open long enough to get some trails, you will get white out from too much light intake. I am not sure i understand your settings. Shutter 1.3? That one confuses me. I never really get how the shutter speeds are listed...I know how they work, but on my Canon, the way they are noted just confuses me. I guess I will just use some trial and errror. Maybe get an ND filter if I take in too much light. Fav on this btw! Great work!
Thanks Marybeth. It was a long exposure of 1.3 seconds without a filter. I was surprised I needed to use a low ISO to get what I got. Good luck in getting your "hotaru" shot.
@anthalas Hi Ian - again, sorry for the late reply! ISO 125 and there was a fair amount of ambient light. It was that dusky time when the fireflies all start to get active.
