a snooze

I did it. I finally got a decent shot of "Maisy." We named the hummingbird when she first started coming the first summer we moved in, and yes, I'm aware it's probably not her, but likely her offspring.

It only took over 30 minutes of me sitting patiently on the veranda amid mosquitoes and a glass of red wine. I positioned myself nearish to the stand of cardinal flowers that I was sure she'd come to if I sat still enough. But instead she sat, what seemed like an eternity on a butterfly bush perch that I kept from last year. Occasionally she'd come to the feeder, but I didn't want a "hummingbird at the feeder" shot. I wanted her by her (and my) favorite flower in my garden. There are dozens and dozens to choose from (thanks to her help), and if I just waited long enough...until I started to really get bit up (and the fruit flies became more attracted to my wine), so I stealthily moved closer and close (shoot shoot), and another step (shoot shoot), and more until I was pretty darn close with my 300 lens. When I actually saw the photo, I realized she was taking a little nap! Pretty comfortable. It was shortly after that she put on the show and allowed me the shot in my other album! I good evening.

That is so exciting! I think that now that she's comfortable around you and the camera, you'll probably have other opportunities to photograph her. In the meantime, this shot and the other one are awesome!

Awesome! I've been trying for a hummingbird all season and their rule seems to be: "She's here with no camera (or short lens) so we'll be really cute and fly about. She's here with that long lens. Bye for now."

FAV -- for the image, beautifully captured, and for the fun-to-read-and-imagine-you-there narrative!
