We had a yellow jacket hive in the ground of our front yard. I really was uncomfortable with where it was so close to the street and prone to being disturbing by lawnmowers and passersby, so I sprayed, and sprayed, and sprayed until they stopped activity. I don't know if this is an escapee from that hive, but seeing it does send a slight pang of guilt. Upon closer view, pollen can be seen on the hairs on its head.
Sadly sometimes you have to choose safety first. You really don't want your children or a passerby getting stung by a disturbed hive. Great shot though- the details are fantastic.
