Brought to you by emerald ash borer

One of our public library branches features trunks of ash trees that used to grow on the site where the library was built - all of them dead because of the emerald ash borer invasion in Michigan. Emerald ash borer bugs were "imported" from Asia and don't have any natural predators here. Millions of ash trees have disappeared, and the bugs leave very distinct patterns on the wood. The designers used the trunks as the main feature of the library, making it interact with the nature area outside. There is even a documentary about designing and building this library branch: https://aadl.org/up_from_ashes

Thanks for visiting!
how sad about the ash trees - imported species really do cause a lot of damage to an ecosystem. The trunks are a beautiful feature.

Fascinating. They got here about three years ago. Probably before, but that is when the trees started dying.

Great image, I like your choice of b/w. There is a place in Madison, WI that works with the dead ash trees in a similar manner.
