This is the "vintage" version of the picture from my main album today: an answer to the "Get Pushed" challenge from Francoise to do a photo with a vintage feel to it. Sorry for the cheesy border, too late to figure out something better. And - I HAVE to learn how to use layers when editing. I think some real post-processing learning is coming my way in the future.
Thank you for your visits, comments and critique!
Nice processing for the challenge :) I keep trying to get into layers and sort of understand and then fail to practice and have to start again. I was looking at Affinity again yesterday. To my ignorant eye it looks a bit like a nice cross between PS & LR. Do you shoot raw and if so are you happy with processing raw shots through Affinity?
@pistache
Oh my.... you just second my struggle with layers: If I see or read something about it, I kind of get the idea. But again - due to the lack of time, I just never got into layers sticking just to the most generic sliders, and then I completely forget how to even approach the topic in my own editing and when it would be a good case for actually doing it. I think at this point, I need some formal training in it, with someone standing over my shoulder and explaining things on the go.
Shooting raw.... I don't for a couple of reasons: First, I've always used just iPhoto and it doesn't handle RAW files (I don't know about the latest version and about Photos), second, I am such a bad organiser of photos and keep running out of space on my computer, so keeping it smaller helps. Also, as I understand, processing will take longer with the raw files, and I am really short on time most of the days. And the last and most ridiculous reason is in my head - switching to RAW would mean to me that I am starting to take the whole photography thing serious, and I don't know if I want to take this step now. It's an everyday thing already, and I am having ton of fun doing it, looking forward to each new day like a new step of a giant treasure-hunt. But for me, finding the treasure is more fun than actually making sure I got it perfectly right (with right settings, at the best possible quality etc...). For this, JPEG is perfectly fine. I do, however, in the back of my head think about a possibility of taking a formal, structured, organised course on photography - if that ever happens, I would be happy to perfect the skills. For now, it's still mainly a a mixture of half-informed and half-intuitive snapshooting. :) Sorry... long answer to a simple question.
So, I have Jpeg files and I do process them with Photos, and sometimes with Affinity, often both. Fairly happy, but I wish I would know more :)
'someone standing over my shoulder and explaining things on the go' ...
i want him. or her. in my house. now. (and probably forever.) if you find them, could we do a joint package?
thanks for your answer :) i do shoot RAW and it looks like you have to use a specific part of Affinity for RAW, which may or may not be good. on the other hand, if you find JPEG perfectly sufficient for your wonderful photos, maybe i should just go back to that? i'm sure my laptop storage department would be happy.
last year i did a 10-week intermediate evening course and then 10-week creative at the local uni. before that i had barely used a digital camera. as you may have spotted, i got hooked. i think i'm probably only quarter-informed but learning fast, largely thanks to 365, and loving the ride. a formal processing course would be very helpful though :)
@pistache I am glad you got hooked! We are enjoying it a lot! And it would be fun to lean together if there would be a chance! I hope you find a way to use Affinity (or whatever else you are looking at).
I don't shoot raw for a similar reason, just learning little bits as I have time AND it seems fun. I like this, but I have to say that I LOVE the blue version.
@pistache can we do a 3 way share...... I'm in that big dip where I'm overwhelmed by how little I know....have all this new fab equipment but feel more lost than with my old point and shoot and free editing software!! Need time to learn and practise!
@newbank I know exactly what you mean!!!! If you guys are up for some kind of "get ourselves pushed" thing` I would be up for it! I've just got a new camera too, an unexpected and unplanned upgrade - love it, but am also realizing that it is indeed an upgrade and I have to learn A LOT to be able to use it's all potential. As for editing - I know embarassingly little, but do want to learn more. It's just so much stuff out there that I've suddenly realized that I don't know that it is hard to start somewhere (and I wouldn't really know where)! I am glad I am not the only one who feels this way, @pistache
