Found a box of chocolate cake mix in the back of the pantry and had just enough buttermilk that was about to expire for a recipe in “The Cake Mix Doctor.” And I had some candy canes left over from Christmas for the peppermint buttercream frosting. It was a little dry . . . but beggars can’t be choosers and it’s practically the only chocolate left in the house.
