happy earth day

Stalking the wild sweet azalea at Green Spring Gardens. These are common-ish where I live in Virginia, but I’d never seen them before I moved here so it still gives me a little thrill when I see them blooming in the spring. Even though we were walking later in evening, the park was a little crowded and it was harder to keep jumping off the path when other walkers were around. I might have to forgo going there until the quarantine is lifted.
Pink! The ones around here are orangish. Always called them "native azaleas", which I guess is the same thing as a wild azalea?

@margonaut Orange! I’ve never seen an orange wild one — it’s on my wildflower bucket list though. If I ever get to visit Atlanta I’ll time it so I can see them blooming!

This is so pretty! I lived in Virginia for several years but don't remember the wild sweet azalea.

@eudora I think you told me you went to Mary Washington, right? There is a battlefield near there — I think it’s just the Fredericksburg Battlefield. There are quite a few of these there along the edges of the woods. They’ve become one of my favorite wildflowers!

@wiesnerbeth I did go to Mary Washington and I remember the battlefield. But it was so long ago I don't remember the wildflowers! I had great plans for this spring after knee surgery made walking fun again. I wanted to go on garden tours and revisit the Texas bluebonnets and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Next year!

@eudora Oh I’ve been there! But it was probably 30 years ago. Silly, but it just occurred to me that one of my nieces is living in Austin now, so I could go back . . .
