watering my tree named dottie

She survived the cicadas, but now I think something is nibbling on her — deer maybe? Keeping a baby tree alive is tough work.
Looks good to me. What kind of tree is she?

@margonaut She’s a dogwood. I tried to think of a “dog name” but the only dog we ever had was named “King” and I couldn’t come up with any ideas. The dogwood is our state tree and state flower. I requested a mini-grant from our PTA for her so I’d have a living example of the state symbols for our first graders. I’m also using her for my new “tree named Steve” this coming school year. They planted her near our butterfly garden and outdoor classroom, so now I won’t have to march the kids across the driveway and keep them out of the parking lot.

Oh yes, I had forgotten about your dogwood state tree/flower!

Dogwoods are one of the things I miss about Virginia!

@eudora I love them too! Unfortunately I was still out of work with my broken shoulder when they planted it. I didn’t realize until I came back a month later that they got a white one, but it isn’t the native one. Oh well. It’s still pretty.
