I have never tried this fluffy toy in front of the flash, I guess it diffuses the harsh light a bit?

I don't think it is a fluffy toy, it is what they call a 'dead cat' and it covers a microphone on a camera to block out wind noise.
I guess he must be videoing something and using sound too.
