"Gruesome" Victorian photography

April 16th, 2013
Headless Victorian photographs. Before the era of Photoshop, the Victorians loved to do these sort of shots apparently

They are strange and I don't understand why! lol - especially the ones where they act like they are chopping their heads off!
April 16th, 2013
wow that is creepy!
April 16th, 2013
They were pretty sick, eh?
April 16th, 2013
These are great. If anyone cold explain to me how it was done please? did they cut up negatives??

This is a good argument against people who say that photoshop isn't real photography

And I thought my Victorian lips shot was creepy.

@northy I knew him, Northy.
April 17th, 2013
These are fabulous - I want to know how they're done - could be fun!

Creepy!

I like the cloned pictures better with two seamless shots of the same model combined. These are a bit too disturbing for my tastes.
April 17th, 2013
So bizarre! Who'd have thought!
April 17th, 2013
@lindseying ah! but did you know him WELL? ;p
April 17th, 2013
Haha, these are AWESOME!
April 17th, 2013
That is...disturbing. What in the world were they thinking? LOL!

I think the next theme winner should pick "headless shots" as the next theme! Yay! I need to work on my GIMP skills though!
April 17th, 2013
and HOW did they do this with the headless pics?
April 17th, 2013
Very strange indeed!
April 17th, 2013
I thought the oldest weirdly bizarre photos (err, paintings) were the Fayum mummy portraits. I have also read the book "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" which contained weird photographs of peculiar people from another age (most of them were extraordinary, some were plain weird). The website you shared is, by far, the weirdest. Freaked me a bit.
April 17th, 2013
ooooh this is SO bizarre!! I see a selfie like this in my future!!
April 17th, 2013
I also wonder how on earth they created these photos before the days of photoshop!

Interesting compilation. I am not quite that old but did a lot of ferricyanide reduction, "blocking-out" of negatives and scissors-and- paint manipulation in pre-digital days, and my father took a lot of headless snapshots of the family ..... He never did manage to master that half-inch reflex viewfinder on his Box Brownie.

LOL they gave me a giggle... particularly like the one with the red smeared on it to look like blood.

I'm thinking that it was popular because someone was playing around one day and learnt something new and it went from there.... the first one you can see the cut line.

@breigh @espyetta @pocketmouse @ingrid2101 Totally loving that you guys think these are as great as I do.
April 17th, 2013
awesome I may do a homage
April 17th, 2013

April 17th, 2013

April 17th, 2013
