Why do some photos with only a few fav ticks get on the the PP while others with more don't make it? I have one at the moment with 8 fav's which hasn't made it yet - who know it may still - while another new one has just popped up with only 5. It doesn't make sense.

One of life's great mysteries. In spite of the claim that it is decided by a very clever algorithm it seems quite random, with perhaps a little bit of digital manipulation (by human fingers, that is!)

But why worry? It's not a competition, just a bit of fun; no gold medals and no pressure to take drugs or bribes, so just sit back and enjoy!

If it is anything like Explore on Flickr then it will remain one of those unfathomable mysteries of the universe.

@wordpixman Because it gives me a buzz as an enthusiastic amateur to have a picture on the PP. I know it's not the be all and end all, it's just a nice feeling.

@busylady hi there! I went to look at your photo with 8 favs. It is great btw! I love the bare trees! One thing I have noticed over my year and a half in here....if the photo's " taken on" date and the calendar date it's posted on are not the same, it won't make the popular page. Except I did once see a person posting a year of "old" photos from a trip he had taken....and if posted the right month and # in the matching day, he did get on the PP at least once. Since the site is about taking a pic a day, I guess that is the reason for this if what I am saying is true. Otherwise, people could just store up stockpiles of their awesome photos, that they have taken and edited over time and put them on the site....in essence "beating out" at times people who do the take a photo and post it daily thing. You do not have to actually post it in the day taken because you may be too busy. But once you post it, it needs to be on the date matching the day you took the pic. And every now and then, we have all had 1 or 2 pics that are even in the right date and have lots of favs not make the PP....that is still a mystery ....

Once your recent average number of favs per picture gets quite high the algorithm makes it harder for you to make the PP. The idea is to give new people a chance to make it there which seems fair enough. I had a 20 fav picture not make it this week. Maybe you are getting too good is the problem!

I have had shots with between 8 and 20 fav's, which have never made the PP. I don't really care anymore. My friends and followers comments are what count for me the most!
I have been on the PP of 500px which I consider really cool!

@espyetta That is a good theory, but unfortunately not correct. I have been on 365 for 324 days now. Nine of my images have made PP and one has made top 20. None of those were taken on the day I posted them, and two were 8 months old. I am not on 365 to make PP, but it is a thrill so I understand why Judith is asking the question. Here is what I think: to make PP, you need to get a lot of attention quickly after you post. All nine of my images that have made PP had a very high FAV to comment and FAV to view ratio. And they all started getting comments immediately after posting them. Of course, the magic monkeys also are responsible and that is why sometimes you have images taht you think will make PP and they never do.

@espyetta That's not actually true, I have had several photos taken on dates different to when they were posted (fillers) make the PP.

I've made the PP well over 30 times and can really say it's fairly random. Yes, favs do count, but I've had one with only 2 favs go on while others with over 10 never "make" it. Some stay on for 3 days, others for 2-3 hours!

It's just for fun, don't focus too much on it. :)

I think its just the formulas. You have alot of views in relation to comments and favs. If all the viewers would leave a comment and drop a few favs it would happen. Too many people view without commenting. So it depends on who is following you also. Get more followers that leave comments. It is a nice feeling and doubt anyone can say its not. Keep going- it will happen.

Sometimes PP photos are displayed only for a short time and if one isn't on the computer 24/7, which I am not, you would never know unless one of your friends notifies you about it. I think there should be a way that it appears in notifications if you photo makes PP, even if it's only there a half an hour. What I am saying is that it's possible your photos appeared briefly and you just didn't see it.

MAGIC MONKEYS!!!!

Unfortunately that seems to be a big mystery, I too can't comprehend how's that work but it's okay. I am actually finishing my first year of 365 today and not once of my picture made it there which is really okay. Just enjoy your time and the friendship you will make.

Wow! A new topic!

I've had shots with 50 - 60 favs not make PP and shots that made Top 20 that never made PP. Its all based upon your own success rate as determined by a mathematical equation used by the computer.

This is the quintessential 365 question and ranks up there with, Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" The only thing I can say about this question is if you ask 3 photographers about how it's calculated, you'll get 5 answers.

If PP motivates me to try totake better photos, then yeah!

But if I need it for the thrill of winning, then that is a little sad.

I find the rather randomness of it keeps people from gaming the system and produces a wider range of photographers on the PP page. No one wants to see the same photographers there everyday.

I think the magic monkeys are pure genius!

I think it depends too on how many faves others are getting on a particular day. You may have a day where not as many people are faving stuff all around and it might get easier to get to the PP and then other days when everyone seems to be rockin' it with the faves and it's more of a challenge to get up there.

I've stopped guessing and just allow myself to be pleasantly surprised if something shows up there, even for just half an hour. And if not, that's fine too. :)
