I have just received word that all my family is safe. My daughter and her family has been evacuated from their costal property in Christchurch. I'm sending my thoughts and prayers to everyone else with family and friends in New Zealand. I hope your family is safe and have moved to higher ground if they are in costal areas.
My family and friends in Wellington said their whole house was shaking and they've lost power. It was the biggest quake they've felt in a long time. It seems to have been felt strongly throughout the Wellington area even though it was close to Christchurch.
It was certainly a big one, with a lot of aftershocks as well. According to the Geonet app we had 21 quakes in the space of an hour and not much sleep.
felt 300km away from the epicentre as a big long shake, must have been a minute and still feeling aftershocks but we are far enough away for no damage, unusually the aftershocks have moved all over the country, they dont call us the shaky isles for nothing!, this is one of our news sites if anyone is interested http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/86416304/live-north-canterbury-quake
@k1w1@kiwichick Glad that you family and friends are safe. Having gone thru a 6.1 (2001 Nisqually earthquake), they have their health and friends to support them and to get them thru the aftershocks, both physical and emotional. God bless.
I have managed to contact some of my family they are all OK but haven't yet heard from a cousin in the sounds can only hope they are OK.
Stay safe everyone
We are nearly 800km from the epi-centre and it woke us up. Went on for about a minute and was like being on a boat. Haven't felt a quake in years, thank goodness.
Don't think I would be very good living in the South Island.
Thinking of everyone down there.
@dawnee Thanks for checking Dawn - We have been busy sorting out our leaking hot water cylinder amidst many strong/severe aftershocks -its been a rough night and day here in Marlborough Sounds. No more please! Maybe a couple of hours sleep was all I got last night. Thanks 365er friends for sending good wishes. Thankfully all family and neighbours are ok and one son got safely back to Christchurch from here just before the quakes hit. Lucky timing as they were on that road.
@byrdlip@k1w1@andreajoy Thanks for all the comments. I was lucky to miss this by a week, although I did feel a small earthquake on the Friday before we left (at 5.30am which woke me up). Strangely enough after growing up in NZ the biggest earthquake I've ever felt was in Mexico!
Read early this morning. Hope for the better for all of you. I's curious enough that antipodal Italy and NZ are shaking almost at the same time (we had the last big one on October 30). Stay safe!
Way up in auckland not affected, but Wellington and South Island towns are for sure. It was a biggie.. in fact two almost concurrently. Thinking of you in those areas.. @tracie8266 hope you're ok!
Rang my friend in Wellington yesterday & while we were speaking there was a rumble, could hear it over the phone. She lives on the side of Mt Victoria. She is not worried. Has been through so many, but we pray no more for you folks over there. i LIVED THERE ONCE & remember movements & shakings.
I'm glad to see many of you have survived with nerves still somewhat in tact. We've only felt a little rumble here once, and I do mean little compared to what you've gone through, however it did knock a few things off the shelf in the kitchen closet. My thoughts and prayers will be with all as you sort things out and get back in touch with family and friends.
One of my favorite things about 365 the making friends around the world but that also brings concerns every time we hear about a tragedy. I hope everyone is well and stays well.
