Compact camera

November 16th, 2016
Hi guys!

I come here to ask about camera gear, well, about compact cameras.
I own a Canon 6D, a gorgeus camera; and lot of devices with AWESOME cameras: Nokia N8, 808 Pureview, Lumia 1020 and Lumia 950XL... the ones that I use to keep up with the project (even lately I really suck at it, my time isn't enough to work in a full time contract and study two masters xD).
Well, apart from that, now I'm searching for a good compact camera, the 6D is really awesome, but its HUGE haha I want to have a camera to carry everywhere with me, daily I mean, and the 6D can't be one of those...
Which camera do you recomend me to buy? High quality and specs for professional use. Any of you have one of that kind? =) And please, if could be cheap, better xD hahaha

Thank you!

May seem strange but I have seen some great results here and other sites with a mobile. Know what you mean re big but every time I look I keep lugging.

@padlock Hi Padlock! I also have awesome shots with a mobile, here and in other sites, but being strict... no mobile-camera it's superior to a "real" camera nowadays, difficult shots at night, zoom and other things need a special "taste" hahaha
So, don't you have a compact one? I really LOVE my 6D, but is too have to carry it with me al the day xD And too big hahaha
Thanks!

I'm with you, @petaqui in that my iPhone only takes me so far... I have two mirrorless systems... a Sony nex7 and an Olympus em5mark II... i haven't time right now, but if it's helpful, I can run down what I like and don't like about each of them tonight...

The Sony RX100 are worth a look. There are currently 5(!) models released. Here's a comparison of the models. I have the Mark IV.
https://www.dpreview.com/articles/7237085229/spoilt-for-choice-which-sony-rx100-is-right-for-you

I do like it despite what I'll mention to you in the next paragraph. The Mark IV and V do video incredibly well, better than ANY DSLR and probably only rivalled by the RX10 III and the top of the line mirrorless Lumix models. Has features (and quality) that might be expected only in a dedicated pro video camera. The still images (IV and V anyway) are excellent, and low light performance is extremely impressive. The fast ZEISS lens is very clear and sharp. It easily fits in your pocket or purse.

A few things to think about. Is the fixed lens at 24-70 (28-100 on the I and II) full frame equivalent enough for you? The menu system is long, extensive and slightly redundant, and badly organized. The control points make up a little for that, but you need to customize them. There are many, many advanced features and individually they perform well, but moving from option to option (I'm thinking of changing autofocus mode especially) can be cumbersome. Documentation that comes with the camera, even the online manuals, is quite dreadful; if you want to get the most out of the camera you'll need supplementary material, something like "Photographer's Guide to the Sony DSC-RX100 IV."

Don't get me wrong, I really like the camera and carry it with me even if I am out with my Nikon DSLRs on a "photo walk" usually with the big camera mounted with a long prime or zoom, using this for the wide angle shots I encounter. Its 4K video and its slow motion and super slow motion unmatched anywhere for the price.

I don't have much experience with other compacts. I'm sure others here will give you further ideas. Good luck.

@petaqui High quality, specs for professional use and cheap.... let me know when you find one because I want that too.
@northy I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on things.

I'm also in the market for a compact camera... I've heard good things about the Olympus TG4 point and shoot. Mostly recently from @cjwhite to get these shots (and probably others): http://365project.org/cjwhite/just-one-more-f/2016-11-15

Question is compact, how compact. Agree re I phone but a friend of mine uses a Nikon P900 and gets wonderful results. At the longer end of the zoom you may want support but a tree, post, concrete block always helps.

I have a little Olympus point and shoot- Stylus. It's waterproof and shockproof. It takes nice photos for a point and shoot- I especially like how it captures color.

I have the Lumix LX 100 shich is nice but limited by not much zoom. 12 MP limits how much you can crop in post and still keep quality. But other than that- nice camera, nice Leica lens, lots of manual and auto controls.
The lens is aperture 1.7 so does great in low light.

so - turns out i'm something of a gear ho ;p

my dslr is the canon 70D... i have the wonderful f/2.8 17-55mm lens... together they are a wonderful system... which happens to be ridiculously heavy...

i have the olympus tgII point and shoot... it's waterproof and shockproof and generally excellent for what it is... and it does fabulous with macro... but it only has limited controls... version IV is out and it allows one to shoot RAW - i expect i shall be purchasing one by and by...

i also have the sony rx100mIV that @frankhymus spoke about... i don't use video so i don't know about that, but everything else he said i agree with... i do find the 70mm reach rather limiting... and it won't do macro in any reasonable way which i think is unfortunate...

then there is my sony nex7 - this is a mirrorless system compact camera... it has a 24mp crop sensor - image quality is most excellent... it is very light and easy to carry around... however, the menu system is unfortunate... and the lens options are rather limited... plus i never really found it to be a good camera for set up and artsy shots, or long exposures... but lots of people swear by this camera and at least one of the newer version is waterproof...

my most recent purchase is the olympus em5markII which is quite a delightful compact system... it is a micro 4/3 and there are tons of lens options... plus i find it much more user friendly then the sony and much more conducive to long exposure shots... i fear, though, that the IQ is not quite as good as the sony, although i have generally been pleased... the one downside (;p) is that it's light enough that i tend to take 2 or 3 lenses with me when i go out and then spend stupid amounts of time switching them out... it is waterproof, btw... and i have been out shooting with it in the pouring rain which it handled just fine... this is a very important feature for me as i love how weather affects light...

below is a quick comparison experiment i did with 3 of the above cameras...

hope the above is somewhat helpful...

I have the Sony RX100 IV mentioned above and love it. But it is expensive. Have a look at the Fuji X20. It's superceded by the X30 so you can get one for a good price. It has a viewfinder but a limited zoom.

I have a Nikon P340 which I REALLY like. I always want a camera that fits in a shirt pocket, or computer bag, so that I (almost) always have a camera with me. I wanted the best quality in the "pocket" size, with manual (or automatic) control.

Probably 2/3 of my images on this site are the P340. Or more.

Looks like it is formally discontinued, but is available on the 1 web site I checked... http://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product-archive/compact-digital-cameras/coolpix-p340.html

Hi guys!!
First of all, thank you all for your opinion, as we can see it's a difficult thing xD

@northy Thanks for the offer! Could be great to know, but at this moment those are "too" big to consider as a comapct camera to carry all day everywhere (I love those 2, I think that are great, not as great as my 6D I supose, but quite awesome :D )

@frankhymus thanks for your huuuge discussion :) Well, I checked that model, but the models you said are too expensive right now for what I'm searching for, I mean, I'm sure that are gorgeus! But I simply don't have so much money to invest in this, as my main camera still my 6D and I want to add more things to that camera, and the lenses/mics/... are so expensive taking in consideration that the quality should match the 6D quality haha Maybe in the future I'll take in consideration those models... What I don't like about those cameras is that the optical zoom is very limited, and I want to get as close as possible to subjects, but from "the outside". One of those models with 300mm or more, would be AWESOME :D

@ludgate Well, the Canon G7X, G9X or Olympus SH-2 aren't bad choices, and the prices I think that are good enough :) Obviously, in this world, higher prices usually means better quality :)

@padlock I want a camera with a huge zoom =) I don't care searching places to stabilize hahaha

@olivetreeann I searched some, and I like the idea of that cameras :D I just want them to have a moving screen, and GPS also would be great...SH-2 it's one that I consider, but I have to check reviews

@lisainstpete I saw that also, but as you said, zoom isn't enough for what I'm searching for :S

@northy Thank you so much for all the info!! The "problem" there is the same as with other cameras mentioned, are too big to carry them everywehre on the pants :S If I could I would carry my 6D everywhere hahaha

@quietpurplehaze The X30 looks GORGEUS! But the zoom is so limited :( damm... would be great with a bigger zoom

@lsquared ouch, the zoom is just 5x :( I'm searching for something bigger, to be able to get closser :)

After replying individually, I want to share what I found:

-- Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX90V (Winner of the TIPPA awards, Camera of the year for travellers):
----- PROs: ultra compact, GPS, moving screen, 30x optical zoom, optical stabilization, ZEISS
----- CONs: small sensor size, bad at night shots, and too noisy even on daily pics at 800 ISO (for me too noisy means having a bit of noise during daytime)

-- Sony DSC-HX60V (quite similar to the above one, but can mount a flash or whatever...

-- Canon PowerShot SX720 HS
----- PROS: ultracompact, 40x zoom, nice sensor
----- CONs: not moving screen,

-- Canon PowerShot G9 X
----- PROs: Great great sensor, great lense
----- CONs: bad zoom, nearly no-one, 3x; not moving screen

-- Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II
----- PROs: Great great sensor, great lense
----- CONs: bad zoom, nearly no-one, 3x; not moving screen

-- Olympus SH-2
----- PROs: Appears to be a great sensor, and a great lense, nice zoom (24x), and cheap
----- CONs: not moving screen

Hard to decide :( Do any of you know those models? Except the G7 and G9, those are best sellers and I already know all their options and quality... but my problem there is with the zoom.

Thank you!!

@petaqui

Thanks for sharing. I think maybe you need to look for a bridge camera to get the zoom you want. I think also some cameras you mention do not have a viewfinder, essential for me.

Just my thoughts. Good luck in your search!
November 21st, 2016
@quietpurplehaze I know that a bridge would be ideal, but not portable xD And that's a must for me right now.
About viewfinder, HX90v, HX60V both have viewfinder :)
Thanks for your opinion!! =)

I'll let you know wich camera I'll buy... the last one I bought is the SJCAM S7 Star, same exactly sensor as GoPro 4 Hero, but in cheap xD haha and with awesome features :)
