Downloads from Unsplash

June 18th, 2023
As I have not been getting out to take many photos this month, I downloaded pics from unsplash to play around with.

My questions, can I use them here and how do I credit the photographer. Do I just mention the name in my tags or do I have to copy and paste all the letters and numbers too.

I hope someone has experience with this and can advise me. TIA

are there copyright guidelines on the site?

oh yeah I just googled and on the front of there is a link that says 'read more about the unsplash license'

I had never heard of this site but I had a look. Interesting.
There is an attribution suggestion on the site.

I think it only proper to give attribution. I know if anything of mine were to be used anywhere, I would certainly want that. I'm glad you asked; it's an important question.

I guess the short answer is "Your project, your rules". And it looks like unsplash's T&Cs say you can use photos w/o attribution... But it seems wrong to not provide attribution.
And I'd hope that you make clear that you'd be processing somebody else's image..

Looks like Unsplash is a division of Getty Images, I have some photos there (from when I experimented w/ microstock a few years ago)... guess I need to confirm that none of them have been ported to use at unsplash!

@koalagardens @ankers70 @granagringa @lsquared Thanks for your response.

I just checked and read more about their licence, and here is what I found, it is free as long as one mentions the photographer.

License
Unsplash photos are made to be used freely. Our license reflects that.

All photos can be downloaded and used for free
Commercial and non-commercial purposes
No permission needed (though attribution is appreciated!)
What is not permitted 👎
Photos cannot be sold without significant modification.
Compiling photos from Unsplash to replicate a similar or competing service.

Tip: How to give attribution ✏️
Even though attribution isn’t required, Unsplash photographers appreciate it as it provides exposure to their work and encourages them to continue sharing.

e.g. Photo by Jeremy Bishop on Unsplash

Longform
Unsplash grants you an irrevocable, nonexclusive, worldwide copyright license to download, copy, modify, distribute, perform, and use photos from Unsplash for free, including for commercial purposes, without permission from or attributing the photographer or Unsplash. This license does not include the right to compile photos from Unsplash to replicate a similar or competing service.

Thanks for the response everyone, much appreciated :-)

now you can get down to playing!

Alternatively you could go through your archives 🥰
I would acknowledge in the description as well as the tag..

I agree with those who suggest it would be fine as long as there is attribution. This is a photography site so all of us can imagine what it would be like to see one of our photos used by someone else, but with no acknowledgement or attribution. Since processing is a huge part of photography, and you don’t have your own photos (I’m assuming) to practice what you want, I think using Unsplash, with attribution, and a description in your narrative of how you used Unsplash would be useful to those of us on the site and fair to the original photographer.

I would err in the favor of acknowledgement even if the site says it's not necessary. I would definitely say something in my commentary as to the original artist, and put their name in the tag too just to be courteous.
