Y2 Challenge - Abstract Household Items

January 8th, 2012
This week we will focus our assignment and skills on taking everyday household objects and showing them in an abstract way. This is a great skill to develop because it allows you to take something you stare at every single day and show it in a different way. Think about the color, the contrast, the shape, the texture, the detail and highlight that in a photograph. This challenge was chosen because many of us are in the dead of winter and do not get to see daylight on work days, so this allows us to find inspiration in the ordinary and not have to brave the cold.

So, many of you may be asking for an example to look at. There are two great sources and the first is to go to search the tag "Abstractaugust", http://www.brighthub.com/multimedia/photography/articles/37001.aspx , and http://www.photopoly.net/25-wonderful-abstract-photos/

Tag for the week y2abstract

And this challenge is open to anyone.
January 8th, 2012
Great idea. I'll join in. Especially as the evenings are dark and wet and I've got a new lens to learn to use!

(although tag search isn't working at present)
January 8th, 2012
@lluniau i cannot search any photo tags right now, so hopefully it will be fixed in a bit. Here is a photo, but what is funny is this is one of the few household items I actually did in abstract style.
January 8th, 2012
Great - I had no idea what it was until I saw its title!

The tag search hasn't been working for a good week or more...
January 8th, 2012
@brumbe Thanks again so much for posting these challenges. Having just started year two myself, I was thinking that I would need some motivation and ideas to keep myself going, and you've captured it perfectly! Can't wait.
January 8th, 2012
Does food count as a household object?
January 8th, 2012
Ohhh can toys count as well?
January 8th, 2012
@5unflow3r @lolanae yup, I will go with the concept that if it is in your house or someone elses or you want it in your house then yes.
January 8th, 2012
@brumbe Thought so, and then starting over-thinking. :-)

January 8th, 2012
To search for the abstract august tag I just search for the thread. Then pick one of the pictures someone submitted. Finally click on their "abstractaugust" tag for their photo and voila, you get them all.

Hope that helps.
January 8th, 2012
@5unflow3r that is a good one.
January 8th, 2012
@brumbe Thanks! :-)
January 8th, 2012
@5unflow3r Here is mine for the day

I think I'm going to try this...and I may just add this to the same subject challenge! Kill two photo themes with one shutter click! ;)

Yea, I'm still here...fighting to get going again.

The challenge saved me today. I was clueless as to what I would shoot. I love abstract.
January 8th, 2012
this is a shot from AbstractAugust last year, an egg carton that happened to be on my bench. Great weekly challenge Paula, now, I am off to put my thinking cap on....

I so love this weeks challenge.

January 9th, 2012
@scooter I do like it and that is why I picked this week in particular for this challenge. I figured that we are all finally back to normal after the holidays and meeting the doldrums of winter so this one works on using our visual and creative ideas.

Your guess is as good as another. Not that common a household item. I reckon it depends on the household.

@brumbe how do I post my photo here? thanks.. new to posting in the challenges.
January 10th, 2012
I'm a bit embarrassed about this, but it fits the theme, 20 years of grime was hidden under some trays on top of the fridge. I only saw it because the repair guy came. (its clean now)

@brumbe If I want to submit one to be shown here, do I only tag it with y2abstract?
January 10th, 2012
@cjlangen tagging it will allow others to do a search, but to add to the conversation with your photo these are the directions.
There are two easy ways to add pictures on to the discussion.
The first is a full size photo: 1) Click on your favorite photo and bring up its page. 2)Look at the right side of your monitor, and go to the word SHARE (it is below tags) 3) go to the box and copy the long address 4) Come back to the discussion, and then paste. 5) If it is not your photo also tag the person who it belongs to so they know you love it (@name) remember no punctuation on either side of the @and name.

The second is to have a smaller file size so to keep the site from getting overwhelmed. http://365project.org/discuss/general/1323/how-to-adding-an-image-in-a-discussion
