Almost a new month, so time to start planning the next challenge :)
Here's my latest crazy scheme - feel free to join in!
There are seven themes, repeating on the same day each week. (Depending on your choices, it might well end up a bit like the thumbnail challenge, but with columns rather than rows...)
* Mondays: Same scene.
Choose one spot, and take a pic of it each Monday. See how different it can look - maybe different times, people, light...
*Tuesdays: Same subject.
You can choose what to photograph, but you have to take a pic of the same thing each Tuesday - feel free to tweak anything else about your shots!
* Wednesdays: Same settings.
You can take a pic of anything you like on Wednesdays, but you have to make a note of the settings on your camera (or choose a specific processing 'recipe' if your camera isn't programmable) and use the same settings each week.
* Thursdays: Same symbol.
Choose a symbol of some kind - letters, numbers, squiggles... Try to find different examples of it every Thursday.
* Fridays: Same shape.
Circles, squares, shell-shapes... the shape is up to you - but you need to find one each Friday during September...
* Saturdays: Same sensation.
Try to find something that stimulates the senses - it could be a particular texture, something that makes you think of a specific scent or sound. Choose carefully as you need to get a picture relating to that sensation every Saturday in September :)
* Sundays: Same something.
This one is up to you - choose a 'something' and take a picture of it each Sunday in September. It can be anything you like- concrete, abstract or intangible...
As ever, the challenge is a guide - it's entirely up to you how you interpret words, if you want to swap days around, etc...
If you join in, make sure you tag your pics 'same-september' so we can all share the fun!
whoa! i'm surfing the discussion page and i find this, but didn't give me any notification. so i'm copying your last para in here so the ladies will get their notification.
i love this challenge. it is quite intriguing and interesting. of course i am in. you know me, challenge challenges me, i challenge challenge.
thanks for this, alia. you're the awesomest challenge-meister!
Looks good Alia- so I just need to clarify this- for example- I take a picture of the wood pile on the first Monday, the second Monday, etc. for the month. I take a picture of a spoon on the first Tuesday, the second Tuesday, etc. I take a picture of a variety of things using the same settings every Wednesday and so on? So that at the end of the month it will look like stripes going up and down the calendar? And I also did not have this show up in my notifications. Did you put a space between all the @ names? If you don't do that, the message board doesn't pick it up. Spaces are better than commas for some reason.
@olivetreeann - ooops, and when i copied it onto my comment, i didn't realize there were commas at the end of the names. ngek! oh, well, i'm too old for this. what's your excuse alia @alia_801 ?? :-)
@alia_801 I am wondering about Saturday and Sunday - on Saturday if you pick a rough texture do you photograph the same object every Saturday or just anything with that texture? On Sunday what do you mean by concrete and intangible? I take it that you photograph the same object on Sunday.
On Monday and Tuesday the 17 & 18 we take my kids to Santa Cruz to move in to their freshman year of college so I'll figure that out. i'm sure I'll have a ton of different pictures around that few days. Maybe I'll have to take the same scene early, or make it be my car. Interesting challenge though, I used the last week of August to show a panorama - I'm thinking or using the column of the same subject to pan the whole height of a redwood tree
@la_photographic My idea was Saturdays - choose a texture (e.g. fluffy) then take pictures of different fluffy things each Saturday. Sunday - choose anything you like (concrete = an actual physical thing, e.g. fruit; intangible = an idea, e.g. sleep, music...)
I hope that helps!
@pandorasecho The tree idea sounds great :) I haven't thought that far ahead yet, but it sounds like you'll be setting the bar quite high!
@alia_801 Yes that is great - if it is fruit for example is it the same fruit every Sunday at different angles or lighting or different items of fruit eg banana 1 week, an apple another week etc? Thanks.
@la_photographic It's up to you! You get to choose your 'something' - and how you interpret it :) I see challenges as a starting point for sparking creativity and creative thinking skills, rather than rigid and defined.
Awwwh... i feel so left out!! I didnt get a notification or make the challenge buddies list!!! LOL!!!!... and this is my 4th month in a row to do these challenges!! I was going to skip this month and go out on my own for a bit but this sure does sound interesting and still flexable Alia..Great Idea's!! I guess you will know if i am "IN" when i post tomorrow or today since i have stayed up all night again!!! :) @alia_801
@alia_801 Hi Alia! i just realized since i am traveling this month i will not be able to do the "same scene" on "Monday's" Unless i switch it out with" Friday's"~ "Same shape". I will not be in the same place for the whole month untill next Friday... is that ok?
I think I might try this, too! I've had a bit of a struggle lately with my project and something like this would be great to help me get back in the flow of things. In other words, count me in - at least I can try! :D
@ellimae You're definitely a challenge buddy! Sorry for the omission! (Apparently noone got notified anyway - something about punctuation or whatever). @joa Challenges are great for taking the focus off getting 'good' photos and helping you be more creative and accepting of your pics - as well as providing motivation. @olivetreeann@summerfield and I (plus some others) have been challenging for over a year now :)
@alia_801 - I didn't receive the notification and ony just thought to look at the challenges tonight. At least this will be easier than the straight line! :)
My same scene: Front of the school where I work
Subject: Me
Setting: Ummmmm, suggestions for my P&S?
Symbol: Number 3
Shape: Circles
Sensation: Heat (it was 119, what else can I do? HA!)
"something:" Doors
@nicolecampbell It seems to have neglected notifying anyone - something about punctuation marks or whatever. Glad you found it in the end!
@nadaa Yay! Don't worry - we all tentatively tried our first challenges... some of us have been at them for over a year and couldn't imagine 365 without a challenge these days! They are somewhat addictive!
@scrappy Good idea! I've made a mental list of some of my plans - others I'll just see what comes along!
@alia_801 This is my first full month challenge. I find as I take on my second year, I get in a rut of same old. This is breathing a whole new life into the "sport!"
I figure I will use the first week to figure out what the "sames" will be. I will come back and complete this for each day this week.
Saturday - same sensation - abandoned
Sunday - same something - water
Monday - same scene - my street
Tuesday - same subject - flight
Wednesday - same settings - Shoot in AV mode choosing zoom, aperture, focus, B&W
Thursday - same symbol - love (sign language)
Friday - same shape - curved arch
I'm going to try this starting tomorrow - first Monday of September - I'll think on what I'm going to do - except the scene will be a fountain outside a church in town - loved it when I was there yesterday in the RAIN!
Catching up with this a bit late... I'm in and hope I'm interpreting the challenge ok.... if not, don't tell me and I'll be in blissful ignorance, ok?! :)
With any luck and a bit of careful planning week one I might be able to keep up. Looks great fun well done Alia @alia_801
Okay, I'm in. It was hard to find something for Saturday and Sunday since I didn't read the challenge until late Sunday. So, I had to utilize what I had already. So, we'll see how this goes. It's always fun to see what everyone comes up with. I wish I were as creative as so many in our challenges.
@megsy Definitely! I see challenges as a guide, not hard-and-fast rules :) Good luck for your exam too! @miley89@filsie65@henrir I think choosing carefully is definitely the key to this (of course, I'm making it up as I go along, so don't look at my albums for examples! I have great ideas but other people follow them through so much better than I do!) Phil - interpret however you like :) Henri - I'm sure you'll do just fine :) (and will most likely do a lot better than I do with it!)
Saturday - same sensation - growing old
Sunday - same something - my husband in our fav places
Monday - same scene - redwood grove
Tuesday - same subject - matryoshkas
Wednesday - same settings - collage of a scene through the years
Thursday - same symbol - infinity symbol
Friday - same shape - valentine
This seems to have generated less discussion here than some challenges but it has produced some wonderful work and I keep checking in on the tag page and being delighted by the pictures that are up there. Any plans for October?
@pandorasecho Thanks, I'm glad you're enjoying it! (Usually I try to get around and comment on all challengee's pics, but I just haven't had the chance this month :( )
I'll ask the rest of the challenge crew what ideas we have for next month - we usually take it in turns and combine our crazy ideas to make challenges :)
@olivetreeann@summerfield - any plans/suggestions for an October challenge? I'm tempted to do another book-word challenge, but not sure...
This was my first month long challenge. Daunting to start, but really fun to finish. I learned so much during this month because, for me, some of the days became about creating an image more so than finding an image. I tried many new things on those days. I also learned to become much more observant as I focused my "looking" on things that would meet the challenge subjects I had chosen. A great experience. Can't wait to see what might be next.
@alia_801 I was noodling around with a thing called Either Or October: two words for each day, one starting with an O, the other its opposite. You get to choose which word to shoot and there'll probably be a freebie for each week (just in case!). Does it sound interesting?
@olivetreeann I guess I'm not awake enough yet. I thought "olive" and could not come up with an opposite. I'm really into things that show results in the calendar view right now.
@olivetreeann I still feel like such a newbie exploring my camera that I find any challenge challenging. That being said, I liked the continuity of September from week to week because it allowed focus on different techniques for me. Trying to capture my street in an interesting way, I tried a reflection shot, ICM, motion blur, and a night shot.
So, I guess I would like something that would force further exploration of technique and camera skills. I am sure I could do that in any context, but I enjoyed being really pushed into it.
@pandorasecho oh- I made up a list, all you'd have to do is choose one or the other on each day. Ex. October 1 is open or shut. Lots of room to play around with that one.
@nadaa I suppose you could combine that goal with the list in that you could decide to the first week in black and white, no matter what the word you chose was, etc. But to me that would be a lot of work. I've been doing the weekly/thumbnail views for 3 mos. now, I need a break from them, and something a little more random.
@olivetreeann Bring it on. The September challenge became so much more than I thought, and I learned so much. The October one will bring a different way of learning. You are right. Technique is something I can always choose to focus on in the context of any challenge. Please add me to the "shout outs" when you post the challenge list.
Hopefully, some of the words will lend themselves to the fall vistas we are planning on photographing. :)
@olivetreeann Either or sounds like fun :) (We had the opposites challenge a while back but those things didn't all begin with O. Have you got a list of O words yet? I can think of origami, orange, outside, on, over, order, orangutan, opposite, obligatory, obvious and obtuse...) :)
@alia_801 Yes- I do have a list and some of them are on there. I'll noodle with it a bit and see if I can put a few more in. The trick is coming up with the opposites sometimes (they don't have to start with o, but what is the opposite of orangutan?).
@dmortega Yes Dorrena we did do a rainbow back in the first week of July- but that rainbow only ran horizontally. If you do Nicole's challenge, the rainbow will run both ways- horizontally in one big block when the month is finished and also vertically because the colors will be taken on the same day each week.
@olivetreeann Hehe - I'm not sure what the opposite of orangutan is (I just wrote every 'o' word I could think of!). Perhaps we should leave it open and see what people come up with! :) Can't wait to see what's on the list :)
@alia_801 I'm off to swimming this morning but checked my list against some of yours- orange, on and over are already on there. I'll be posting the list this afternoon and plan to incorporate a couple of yours before I put it up. I'm looking forward to a month of just shooting some fun odds and ends- oh, that's another either or! lol
I had so much fun with this, I am seriously thinking about doing the same thing with different subjects for October. Maybe I'll just change the tag to same-october and let it keep rolling along?
@alia_801 I figured out why the people you tagged at the start of this missed getting the notice. The comma you put at the end of each name like you do in a list, here gets read as part of the name and changes what the program looks for
whoa! i'm surfing the discussion page and i find this, but didn't give me any notification. so i'm copying your last para in here so the ladies will get their notification.

I'm in, sounds fun
Yay! Welcome aboard! Hopefully it will be lots of fun for all :)
Thanks.
I hope that helps!

I wasn't sure if we are suppose to post here, but here is my same Sat. sensation "parched"
My same scene: Front of the school where I work
Subject: Me
Setting: Ummmmm, suggestions for my P&S?
Symbol: Number 3
Shape: Circles
Sensation: Heat (it was 119, what else can I do? HA!)
"something:" Doors
There, now I put them down, I have to commit! :-D
A month long challenge seems a little daunting, but also fun. Good thing my shot for today was all about a feeling. Off to tag it now.
@dmortega @httpgeffed @ellimae @norikohaizumi
@nicolecampbell It seems to have neglected notifying anyone - something about punctuation marks or whatever. Glad you found it in the end!

@filsie65 I like your approach. My project. My interpretation. :)
I am choosing topics because they make sense this week. Let's see what next week brings.
Sunday: White
Monday: City Hall, Belfast
Tuesday: Sky
Wednesday: Pin Hole
Thursday: The letter T
Friday: Rectangle.
Sunday - same something - my husband in our fav places
Monday - same scene - redwood grove
Tuesday - same subject - matryoshkas
Wednesday - same settings - collage of a scene through the years
Thursday - same symbol - infinity symbol
Friday - same shape - valentine
