I don't know about anyone else out there but I'm hurting for my creative eye anymore. My first year was great and didn't miss a beat. This second year I took it easier and didn't worry about missing days or using fillers. But as of late my inspiration is coming only from family outings (don't get me wrong I love documenting my kids).
So when I saw these posters of Art Elements and Art Principles in the art teacher's room, I thought "Why not get back to the basics and work on looking for basic art elements again?"
Anyone can join me if you so desire, but I know there are a ton of challenges out there to push you to your limits. I figured I'd just take all those pushes and things I have learned over the past two years and get back to basics or art and try creating again. See if this gets me out of my rut a bit.
Last week was LINE and there are some great submissions, and like many of you I was seeing lines all over the place. The trick for me was getting the composition of the lines the way I wanted. Some worked out better than others.
This week may be a bit trickier but may be more open to interpretation. "SHAPE" Not yet considering myself an artist and still learning the basics myself I found this article helpful and it is put much better than I ever could write: Using shape in photography
Don't forget to tag your entries "b2b-shape" (no spaces). You have about a week (again @northy I'm not boxing myself in incase I get lazy again or forget to post the next one.) :)
Feel free to share your submissions to this thread as well.
I had to read the description a couple of times before I understood what it means. Shape and form are very different. Shape would be the outline of an object that draws our attention.
missed week 1, although I did intend to have a go, life just got in the way, so have had a bash at this one ~ not sure I have grasped the concept of shape 'yet' ?
@byrdlip I think that sums it up fairly well. Maybe focus less on depth this week.
@alisonp I think I may struggle this week a bit more but J A gave a good brief description up there. Think of your subject more in terms of flat objects and accentuate their flat shape more as if they were a silhouette (or when in doubt shoot a silhouette) :)
That article is really good. Trying to understand working with shape vs. form... "If your subject is more interesting because of its shape, you need to focus more on angle, perspective and the placement of other objects in the scene. If your subject is more interesting because of its form, you will be more concerned with light and shadow and how you can best emphasize the two dimensional shape of the object."

Back to basics! Thank you for putting some spark back in my creativity... this is just what I needed. I, too, found shape vs. form intriguing. Though I may have actually overlapped shape and line here.
@northy Mr. T's article mentioned in the beginning post describes shape vs. form. But I found it defined more simply - shape is two-dimensional and form is 3 dimensional. This article combined with the one noted above helped me somewhat: http://www.projectarticulate.org/principles.php. I admit though, I am still looking more for silhouettes that other shapes.
@smithak
Hi I like your photo (black & white puts the emphasis on the composition and the birds); I think regarding this Art Elements series it works better for last week's theme, Lines--the vertical + horizontal~~telephone pole + telephine lines are so strong in the image.

You used lines (first element) to create a shape (second element). Love it!
