Hi, this is a theme that I have seen on different websites. The camera, named Victoria in memory of my beloved daughter is on the way to Kali66 in NZ. I will set up a blog on wordpress for the participants to post in. You will receive an invite from me and will open a free wordpress account to participate. The deal is you keep the camera for a week or so and shoot whatever you want, then send it to the next participant. The camera will hopefully be returned to me at the end of the year. If you are interested in participating please email me at lasousa@me.com. Include your mailing address (snail mail) with the email correspondence. The Challenge will be limited to the first 51 participants, the last being myself!
The camera is easy to use. Set the aperture to A if you wish and the camera chooses the shutter speed. You can also shoot fully manual, setting both aperture and shutter speed. I have included spare batteries in the box. The camera will work without batteries but they work the internal meter. With each participant I will email the place to send the camera next. There is a small notebook in the box with an old fashioned pencil for including a small note before passing the camera on. For information on the camera see this article from the Film Shooter's Collective.
Each person is encouraged to keep the camera for about a week then pass it on. No hard and fast rules. Just keep her running around the world. THERE IS SOME ANXIETY ABOUT HAVING TO TAKE ALL THE IMAGES AND UPLOAD THEM THE SAME WEEK! PLEASE TAKE THE TIME WITH THE CAMERA THAT YOU NEED TO TELL THE STORY. ALL I ASK IS RESPECT SHOWN TO THE PERSON WAITING TO RECEIVE THE CAMERA. IF YOU NEED 2 WEEKS TO TAKE THE IMAGES, SO BE IT. AND UPLOAD YOUR OWN STORY WITH THE IMAGES TO OUR BLOG WHEN YOU CAN. ON THE UPLOAD THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO RUSH. LET THE EXPERIENCE SINK IN AND IF YOU DECIDE TO TELL A SHORT STORY ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH YOUR UPLOADED IMAGES (NOT REQUIRED) THEN YOUR KIND WORDS WILL GRACE US ALL ALONG WITH THE BEAUTY OF YOUR IMAGES!
No. I hope the camera goes all over the world. Please send me your mailing address to lasousa@me.com. I'll accumulate participants and once we have a reasonable number of people I'll ship out the camera with instructions on how to assemble and send the developed photo's and where to send the camera next.
I'm up for this, I'll mail you my postal address when I go up to my office later this evening... wonderful initiative Louis, it will be a privilege to take part.
Well, you can count one in from Canada! It sounds like a great idea and a lot of fun. Just worried that my photo abilities are not up to snuff ... what degree of proficiency is required to participate? Like Richard said, it would be an honour to participate.
Hi Louis, that's a yes from New Zealand. What a great idea to work in cooperation with like minded photographers: just what I hoped this type of community was trying to achieve.
@caseyrybeck Hi Brett. Please email me your full name and mailing address. The camera will go out to @Kali66 this weekend.....From there who knows how far it will travel.
@pickerandagrinner Louis, i hope its as easy to use your camera as the blurb says, I havent used a film camera since i was 18, what kind of film would it be best to get and is there a simple way for a beginner to develop the negatives at home , i can get chemicals on our equivalent of ebay... or would i be best to send them away somewhere?
@kali66 I develop my own but it will involve some expense. Color Kodak portra or ektar. Ektar is more vivid. Black white kodak tri x. Lab is probably best. You need a dark bag, Paterson tank and reels to do yourself with chemicals. If self develop definitely black and white. Will post links to developing at home.
@kali66 For this roll and to keep things simple unless you are experienced with home development and have the materials I recommend lab processing and conversion to a CD Rom or digital web format, allowing you to upload the images to our blog. I will post a how to on black and white developing tomorrow. It is actually very easy once you get the hang of it although it appears daunting at inception.
We have participants from South Africa, England, Wales, New Zealand, Canada, US, France....there may be others....10 in total so far....not including yours truly!
@kali66 Yes. Red will be the most contrast but is a 3 stop loss of light. Yellow is 1 stop loss of light. Orange I believe is 2 stops. Since you will lose shutter speed you may need to use a tripod depending on the nature of the light you are shooting in. Yellow will give nice pop to the sky, Orange more, red even more. They also have different effects on skin tones. I think orange or green give nice effect to skin tones but not sure....I'll try to find a post from net to put here on this point.
@kali66 Here's a good talk on using black and white filters. I use them all the time. I have also used a polarizer. There's a good chart in the center describing filter characteristics. I am not sure the Canon meters thru the lens, so I would do manual metering or use the Sunny 16 rule, then compensate for the factor of the filter. 2X means 1 stop loss of light. 3X means 1.5 stops. http://www.fineart-photography.com/bwfilter.html
@kali66 For manual metering you can use Sunny 16 rule. Reciprocal of film speed at F16 in sunny conditions then just change aperture for reduced light. Many discussions on the web. Once you know the base rule you can then work equivalent exposures. There is also a great light meter app in the App Store. Or you can use your digital camera, but carry 2 cameras...ugh. For black and white the "rule" is meter for the shadows. The film will hold highlights very well. But as you have demonstrated rules were meant to be broken!
@olivetreeann Ann, we now have a fantastic participant from Luxembourg (Google Frank Lehnen) and an amazing photographer film photographer from Southern California JR Smith (google FogDog photography).
i have my mother's old manual meter, will pull it out and see if i can understand how it works, i am getting a bit overwhelmed so no doubt i will end up just winging it! lol
Thanks for all the interesting links and information given in the comments Louis! Would love to see a world map and where the camera is traveling too :-)
@overalvandaan Sure Saxa. If I can figure out how to do it I will post it. I will set up a blog on wordpress with all participants as "authors" having the ability to upload. I hope each author will write a short post on the experience to accompany. The camera will be named Victoria in honor of my beloved deceased daughter.
@colinbarber013 Thanks colin. I don't think I have your mailing address for adding to the list....If you want to participate please email this to me at lasousa@me.com....
The camera is posted to Kali66 in NZ. Its name is Victoria. Enjoy everyone! Will set up blog post and send invites to all participants. It will be in wordpress and you will open a free account to participate there....L.
So excited to be in! Hope one week will be sufficient to shoot and have the film processed (it would certainly not be sufficient if I had to process myself, lol). At least I can scan with fairly good quality...
Lou, what are we supposed to do with the negs, after loading the scans?
@domenicododaro Domenico, a week is not hard and fast. If you need a bit more time to tell the story you want to express then use it. When finished send the camera along and upload the images when you have free time. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO HURRY TO UPLOAD THE IMAGES! THE PROCESS DOES NOT HAVE TO BE COMPLETED IN A WEEK!
Hi, I am closing out this challenge at the end of today, 5:00 p.m. EST US time. If any others are interested in participating please email me at the address shown in this string before then. As time progresses I may open it up again but I have to gather myself to organize things. Organization is definitely not my strong point....Thanks for all of the enthusiasm to date. Will post a link to the ongoing blog here and in my own posts in 365. I am not sure there is a way to link the blog to 365. I'll email the administrators to check.
@ingrid2101 Ingrid not sure if you sent me your mailing address. Please email it to me at lasousa@me.com. I may have added you to the list but it has gotten a bit crazy. Kali has the camera now.
I'd be interested.
