New Artist Challenge - Harry Callahan

April 13th, 2017
Thanks go out to everyone who participated and voted in the last Artist Challenge, and a special thanks for those that voted for my Man Ray “Tears” inspired photo!

I received help from @kali66 with picking our next artist for the challenge. This artist has some amazing diversity and started his photography late in life after turning 30. He didn’t have a straight style, but changed his techniques and styles several times in his career.

The name of the photographer is Harry Callahan (and he is not Dirty Harry).

Please watch this video to get a very nice overview of his Bio and work:

American Photographer Harry Callahan

…and finally

American Harry Callahan 1912 to 1999

Please tag your photo with ac-callahan

Here is a list of all the artist used by 365 for the Artist Challenge to date:
Google Docs Spreadsheet

Please reference or give some indication of the style or image from Harry Callahan's portfolio that has inspired your entry! It’s always interesting to see the results and what inspires folks for this challenge!

NOTE: You can submit as many entries as your wish as long as the entries were taken or processed within the time frame of the challenge.

The challenge starts now and will close at 9PM Pacific on April 30 2017. This should give everyone time to participate and allows for the Easter break. Shortly thereafter five finalists will be selected and you will get to vote for the winner.

So...... get creating Harry Callahan Masterpieces!

Thanks, @mikegifford

Wonderful choice. I'm in.

@kali66 Does the group of folks you posted need to be added to the tag database?
April 13th, 2017
yes, i thought the list needed a rejuvenation, but they should have the option opt out first i guess
April 13th, 2017
@kali66 Hi Kali - thank you so much for adding my name to the list. I've watched the video and think I will have a go. Will try to do something along the lines of his early work with stark lines and sharp contrasts involving natural components. Who knows?? Cheers Rob Z

@kali66 Thanks for the tag kali, his work looks very interesting, I might join in for this one :) I'd like to be added to the tag list please @mikegifford

Really interesting and another name I'd not heard of. I love the black &white stuff & the double exposures! I can't wait to have a play around :)
Great choice

@kali66 Okay, if nobody ops-out over the next week I'll add the group to the tag list in the 2nd tab of the spreadsheet.
April 13th, 2017
Thanks for the tag @kali66 . I gave it a try.
April 13th, 2017
@marcy0414 haa immediately recognisable :)

@kali66 Hi again Kali - just a couple of quick questions so I don't do something stupid. Do we just use his concepts as a starting point - can we then branch off and produce something that we conceive, from his same starting point, but not necessarily the same style? Or do we try to produce something in his style? Or is either OK? Be fun to try whichever is the format. Thank you.

@robz anything goes as long as it is inspired by his works :) the best part of this challenge for me is learning about the artists and seeing how their work starts my own creativity ticking
April 14th, 2017
you can learn a heck of a lot by trying to emulate what others have done
April 14th, 2017
@kali66 Excellent - thanks for the info!!
April 14th, 2017
@robz One way to approach the Artist Challenge is to review and study several pieces of work by the artist and then determine not only how and why they produced it, but how can you duplicate the look or something similar that appeals to you. Its sort of a combination technique, push and WWYD challenge all rolled into one challenge. @kali66

@mikegifford Hi Mike - thanks for your help. I've had a look at the videos and I really identified with his early simple line studies eg the trees with the snow and the grass in snow. Going to have a go at something stark with strong lines and good contrast. Good to try something new. Many thanks. Cheers Rob Z

This is brilliant timing. It just fits in with something I am trying to teach myself on the computer!

@kali66 Thanks for throwing down the gauntlet - challenge accepted!

@kali66 I saw a retrospective in Vancouver when we were having a 365 Lady Reunion. He took a photo of my friends block. I think I can grab a redo of that. I have been wanting to look back at his double exposure series but have not tried. But the one thing I was inspired by was his mastery of light in dark spaces.
April 14th, 2017

Well - it's got stark lines and good contrast with the background - but much, too much stuff!!! Learning things though. Going to try for a more minimal look with same basics. It sure makes you think!! Thanks again for adding my name to the list!
April 15th, 2017
oooh I look forward to checking him out and having a play :)
