52 Week Challenge: Week 3 / Jan 15th – Technical: Full Manual

January 14th, 2018
Hi all,

It’s week 3, and it’s time to get technical…

Tomorrow, Monday January 15th begins Week 3 of the challenge, and the theme for this week is:

Technical: Full Manual
While the camera often determines shutter speed and aperture for the photographer, it doesn't know your creative intent. This week, challenge yourself to assume creative control over the camera by using full manual mode. Select a subject where varying the aperture and / or shutter speed helps enhance the composition and visual qualities of the image.

About the Technical category:
Technical Aptitude is just as important as creative inspiration in photography. This year's technical category is primarily focused on in camera processes, however, there will be some post processing techniques included.

Oh my, this will be a real challenge for me. I'll work to see if I can get a decent photo using full manual.

This is "full weird" mode for me!

Okay, can I ask a really dumb question. I never use Full Manual. I usually use A or S. However, in working in full manual, I did pretty good inside. However, trying today to take one outside, I got a completely blank white screen. Where do I start to correct this? Thanks.

@henrir, your question is not so dumb, but I will offer a truly dumb-dumb response. I had the same problem yesterday with A mode. I found I had set the exposure compensation to "+5", so it was over-exposed. I would have thought Full Manual wouldn't do this, but...? Extreme over-exposure?

@henrir Yes, I would guess that you were over exposed. One or all three of your points on the "exposure triangle" (ISO, aperture, shutter speed) will need to be adjusted. Bring your ISO down (on outside shoots I always try to keep this as close to 100 as possible). Close your aperture (higher number) and increase your shutter speed. You will want to look at the light meter in your view finder and try and get that in the center. Here is a good article on beginning to use manual mode Shooting in Manual Mode

@txhawkins @mickalypickaly Thanks for your answers. I have found a manual for my camera online and I am working on the manual settings.
