096 - The City Walls are a major tourist attraction in York, with large numbers of people completing the circuit of just under 3 miles.
During Victorian times, and at intervals since then, there has been considerable pressure to demolish them, but fortunately the voice of conservationists has prevented demolition, although some breaches were made in the walls.
However there were some more positive changes. The original wall walk was only half the width of the current walk. The Victorians widened the walk to allow public access, and most of the walls were so treated.
More recently the health and safety lobby has resulted in the installation of railings at the city side of long stretches of the wall walk.
Thank you Lisa.
It's a nice place to walk, away from the traffic and with nice views. Midweek in winter you have the walls almost to yourself!
Thank you Marie.
It's a nice walk away from the traffic, but it can be very busy with tourists this time of year.
Thank you, glad you like it!
