The York Tap by if1

The York Tap

326 - There are a number of interesting buildings within York railway station, and this is a recently restored example.

The building was constructed by the North Eastern Railway in 1907 as the station tea rooms. By the 1970s it was used as a sale room for railway relics - old number plates, oil lamps, timetables and a vast range of other items.

From the early 1980s it became the home of the York Model Railway which used the building for around 25 years.

When the model railway moved out, the building was renovated and re-opened towards the end of 2011 as the York Tap.

Many period features were incorporated in the renovation, and the building makes a pleasant addition to the facilities available at the railway station
This is another lovely old building Ian. It is good to see that an effort is being made to bring the old buildings back into use

An interesting history, and I imagine it's an atmospheric place to have a drink. Judging by your knowledge, you must go there at least once in a while?

Thank you all for your kind thoughts and comments.

We are very fortunate than the York Civic Trust is very active in promoting the preservation of old buildings, and there are many excellent examples of places being restored and brought back into use.

I have to confess that I haven't yet been inside the York Tap - it just lies on my route home from the railway station, so it's a lovely eye catching building as I head for the station exit.
