When in need of a filler, as I am today, I often think of the images I’ve taken at one of my favorite places, the National Aviary. With Halloween a week away, my image of this Malayan Flying Fox (named for its fox-like face) came to mind!
This large species of fruit bat boasts an impressive wingspan of nearly 5 feet and feeds on fruit and flowers found by sight and smell rather than by echolocation. As you can see by my image of this pretty female enjoying a snack, the residents at the Aviary have become accustomed to eating green peppers as well! Interestingly, they actually just suck the juices from the chunks of food that they bite into and then spit out the rest.
I enjoy viewing this image best on the black background.
Thank you all for your support of my project, especially recently as I recover from this Achilles tendon injury and my images have been limited to blessings here at home and the occasional filler. Every kind comment on my images uplifts and is very much appreciated!
A wonderful capture of a wonderful animal! My son once worked at a rescue shelter for injured animals, and it had a fruit bat that was so sweet! We'd go visit her and she was always hanging upside-down.
@cejaanderson Thank you for commenting, Jane! Oh, I'll bet that was a wonderful experience for your son and all who had the priviledge of visiting. They are such fascinating creatures. Thank you for the fav as well!
I enlarged this on black a couple of times - fabulous detail on the Flying Fox. Love those eyes. Quite interesting information about their habits. Keep up the good patient work with your heel - it will pay off!
@milaniet Thank you, Milanie! I had to shoot through the screen of the bat's enclosure, and I was pretty happy that it didn't blur things too much. Also, thank you for comment regarding the heel. I'm not used to being so inactive, but my husband has been so helpful; and I'm looking forward to my next visit with the doctor optimistically! :-)
