Last Fall, after another season of next-to-nothing from two ‘Winter Red’ Winterberries, I surrendered. I planted them to attract birds to their “tremendous profusion of bright red berries” (said the tag); but after five years of trimming dead twigs from between their few live twigs that barely bore leaves let alone a flower or a berry, I vowed to replace them come Spring.
Somehow they must have known their days were numbered; because miraculously, this Spring they sprang to life! Now flowers galore mean a profusion of pollinators, including honey bees. What a thrill to see honey bees at work and, also, to anticipate birds enjoying a red berry feast this winter. Miracles do happen!
Fabulous detail - love that focus on his eye. I believe in your story - those plants heard your plans and knew they'd better get busy! A happy ending for all. Fav
