Moosup Valley Schoolhouse by kannafoot

Moosup Valley Schoolhouse

There are still a surprisingly large number of one-room schoolhouses still standing in Rhode Island. One feature that characterizes all of them is the pair of doors leading into the single room. Boys and Girls were separated by the entrance, although they were still co-mingled inside. This beautiful building was the Moosup Valley Schoolhouse in the Moosup Valley section of Foster. It was built in 1811 and remained in use until 1952. Christian Church services and Sunday School instructions were held here in the mid-1800s, and for a time the building was called the Vestry School. In 1962, another building was moved from across the street and joined to the original schoolhouse. I took care not to show that addition in this photo so as to preserve the authenticity of the original. Combined, they became the Tyler Free Library, and it remains open for that purpose today.

I decided to have a bit of fun with the post-processing, as you can see. I applied my Redynamix HDR filter to really draw out the wide range of details in the photo. On top of that I added a medium blue scale gradient map in soft light blend mode. I then added a yellow to gold gradient map also in soft light blend mode. I adjusted the levels for nice contrast and then added a texture layer that contains the postcard-like frame you see in the finished project. That layer was stacked using a multiply blend mode. I then isolated the central part of the photo using a polygonal selection feathered to 200 pixels, and adjusted the levels of the interior to lighten to school just a hair. An orange photo filter was added as the final layer.
Wow, great capture! Looks like it could be from a movie.

@mariboo Thanks, Missy! A friend of mine keeps accusing me of going "Stephen King" with my processing, so I'm guessing it would be a horror movie! LOL

@karens68 Thanks, Karen! I wanted to try something different with the processing, today. Was fun to play with it.
