Revolutionary Spirit

Burnside Park in Providence is now home to a new monument that serves as tribute to the Rhode Island colonists that fired the first shots against uniformed British military officers in the American Revolution. The Hannah was a packet sloop carrying goods between Newport and Providence. When the British revenue cutter H.M.S. Gaspee sought to intercept the Hannah off the coast of Warwick, the Hannah lead the heavier cutter on a merry chase around Namquid Point and eventually forced the Gaspee aground on a sandbar just off the coast. Colonists filled eight long boats, rowed out to the Gaspee, and burnt the vessel to the waterline. The Gaspee's captain was critically wounded in the fight and historians consider the shot fired by Sons of Liberty member John Bucklin to be the first shot fired in the Revolution. Rhode Island still commemorates the Burning of the Gaspee with a week long celebration each June.

Post processing started with a high contrast filter in Topaz B&W Effects. I adjusted the adaptive exposure, boost black, and boost white sliders. I also heavily adjusted the color sensitivity sliders. In PSE I added a sepia photo filter.
