Layers of Protection

Several items caught my attention when I spotted this scene as a potential subject. First and foremost was the obvious: the layers of barred protection, starting with the fence and ending with the window. All this property owner was lacking was a doberman growling in the distance. Next, though, was the fantastic texture of the brick. This is early 19th century brick, which had a smaller footprint, more texture, and more diversity in color. Finally, the white drain pipe and the off-white window casing, coupled with the bright light hitting the black iron fence convinced me it would make a great black and white. Here you see the results.

Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz b&w FX. I then adjusted the color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, contrast, boost black, boost white, and protect highlights. A slight levels adjustment was made in PSE and it was topped off with a sepia photo filter.
Love all the different textures!
