Staying Ahead of the Storm

30 years to the week after the infamous Blizzard of '78, Rhode Island is bracing for another major blizzard. As of this writing, the forecast still calls for up to 29 inches of snow but with a bit of a twist. After almost a foot falls, we're supposed to get a brief change over to rain. Then we get the second foot on top of that. So shoveling this stuff tomorrow is going to be like shoveling bricks. That is typical of blizzards in Rhode Island, though. We tend to get very wet, heavy snow in storms like this.

Today's photo is of an elderly woman that lives near the end of my street. She must be in her 80s at least, but she's always extremely active around her house. She is staying a step ahead of the storm, keeping her walk clear rather than dealing with over two feet of it tomorrow. In all the time I've lived here, I've never seen her accept any help in shoveling. It's impressive to see her out there caring for her lawn in the summer and shoveling snow in the winter.

Post processing today started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted the color sensitivity sliders followed by adaptive exposure, regions, boost black, boost white, protect highlights, and contrast. I adjusted the levels, brightness, and contrast in PSE, then topped it with a sepia photo filter.

Here's the high res version in Smugmug: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Photo-Challenges/PAD2013/i-6TPTHwh/0/XL/2013%2002%2008_0025%20copy-XL.jpg
Shoveling snow must be a pain! Nice capture of your neighbor.

Love the composition. The sepia filter gives it a nice old look.

Our storm today was big too. 57 degrees and hail ;). The kids in my class got pretty excited. They had not seen much hail and some of the newer ones had never seen it.

@shelldunn Lost power at 8:10 last night. No estimate on when it will be restored since virtually the whole state is out. I've been taking photos but no way to edit or upload them yet.

@shelldunn We JUST got power back! Will likely be tomorrow before the photos are uploaded, though. Temp in the house was at 54 F (12 C) and falling. Forecast is for single digits tonight (F), so power restoration was timely.
