Mill Village Cycling

The Blackstone River Bikeway crosses under RI 116 in the tiny mill village of Ashton, part of the town of Cumberland. Initially, I went there to photograph a waterfall, however there was almost no water flowing over the falls, and a large tree had fallen in front of the most interesting section. That idea was a wash. Walking back to my car, though, I was struck by the beautiful lines in this bridge, so I setup my tripod, composed, and waited. It was another case of picking an interesting background and waiting for a subject to move through the foreground. In the distant background, you can see the tower of the 1850 era Ashton Mills breaking the skyline. There are some excellent brick mill houses in this district, so there is a lot of potential for my neighborhood series. More to come from this area.

Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted adaptive exposure, regions, protect highlights, contrast, boost black, boost white, and color sensitivity sliders. A levels adjustment and a sepia photo filter were added in PSE.

Here's the high res version in Smugmug: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Photo-Challenges/PAD2013/i-RSmTQ5n/0/XL/2013%2009%2006_0019%20copy-XL.jpg
I love that area for shots. So many interesting things in a relatively small area. That bridge is great.
