India Point Sunrise by kannafoot

India Point Sunrise

Those of you that have followed my photos for a while must know by now that I'm partial to black and white photography. It was only a matter of time, therefore, before I posted a beautiful sunrise in black and white. Today provided the perfect opportunity. I had a day filled with meetings, so I knew I wouldn't be able to get out at lunch for a photo. I stopped at India Point Park on my way to work just as the sun was peeking over the horizon. These three motorboats were still in shadow while the sun's orange and red rays lit up the water in the glassy Providence River. In other words, it was perfect for black and white. The actual image turned out a bit brighter than I wanted, so I really had to tone that down in the post processing. What you see before you is very close to the effect I envisioned while taking the photo this morning.

Post processing started with an underexposed filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, boost black, boost white, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment and a sepia photo filter were added in PSE.

Here's the high res version in Smugmug: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Photo-Challenges/PAD2013/i-XnZ6kVq/0/XL/2013%2010%2016_0005%20copy-XL.jpg
