Sea Kayak Lessons

Lincoln, Rhode Island

A couple of years ago, they added a kayak rental center to Lincoln Woods State Park. They also give kayaking lessons. While circling the ring road, today, I noticed a sea kayak lesson in progress on the pond, and decided it would make an interesting photo for today.

Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, boost black, and boost white. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.

Here's the high res version in Smugmug: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Photo-Challenges/PAD2014/i-K4Z3tKf/0/XL/2014%2005%2011_0032%20copy-XL.jpg
Looks like a cool place although I hate boats of any kind haha :D

Fun composition and works pretty well in b&w. I don't know if this is something that was there in raw or come during post-processing. The trees and in background are kind of glowing. Maybe too much sharpening or clarity slider(LR name, might have other names in other programs).

Wonderful b&w. The three in different stages of action work well.

@klas I think it's an artifact from the Topaz treatment. I didn't notice it until I posted it, unfortunately. There's a "regions" slider that increases or decreases the number of tonal zones that will be processed independently. I think, in an effort to improve the contrast on the background trees, I slid it a bit too high, so the background sky glow produced a halo effect. It could have been corrected had I noticed it in Topaz.

Jealous! Been dying to go kayaking. Love your b&w photos. Can I ask why you do them all in b&w? :)

@sierranicole423 Thanks, Sierra! I started to dabble in B&W occasionally about mid-way through last season's project. I decided to do this entire year's project in B&W to (hopefully) improve the technique. I'm also doing more of a focus on street photography this year, although work has frequently interfered with that part of it. Since this site only has the Photo a Day challenge, if you want to see color, feel free to check out either my Smugmug site: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com or my Flickr site: https://www.flickr.com/photos/kannafoot/

Great shot and perfect in b&w. My son and son-in-law are keen kayakers. They sometimes train beginners to the sport.
