The 5th Annual Big Drum Pow-Wow is being held this weekend at the Roger Williams National Memorial in Providence. Today's grand entrance saw the largest crowd of both dancers and spectators that I've seen at this event. Each year, the number of tribes represented grows significantly, and today's event was no exception. I spoke to representatives of tribes from as far away as Alaska, and also met a fairly large contingent from the Mi'kmaq People both from Canada and the US. The Wampanoag nation was also heavily represented, which makes sense since the land on which the pow-wow is held was originally Wampanoag territory. (As an interesting historical aside, we know that Roger Williams received the deed for Providence and the surrounding territory from the Sachems of the Narragansett Tribes. Unfortunately, the Narragansetts didn't own the land - the Wampanoags did. That the two tribes were often at war may have had something to do with the Narragansetts' sleight of hand.) The gentleman in today's photo is Chief Two Wolves, representing his tribe from southern Canada.

Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, boost black, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.
