Providence, Rhode Island

My original plan today was to visit the Thayer Street Arts Festival on the East Side of Providence. Most of Thayer Street was blocked to traffic, and outdoor artisans were setup for several blocks. What I didn't count on was the uncanny ability of the Providence Police Department to turn a festival into a three ring circus. Parking on the East Side is a challenge under the best conditions. There are no lots to speak of, so it's all on-street parking. So how does the PPD address lack of parking when faced with an outdoor festival? Why, they put up "no parking" signs at all of the meters on every street within a 5 block radius of the festival! I'm mindful once again of my favorite quotation, "Folly thou conquorest, and I must yield. Against stupidity, the very gods themselves contend in vain." So, instead of photographing the arts festival, I headed downcity. As soon as I parked, I spotted this gondolier poling his way down river. With the nicely sunlit buildings in the background, I opted for this as my daily photo.

Post processing stared with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, and boost black. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.

Here's the high res version in Smugmug: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Photo-Challenges/PAD2014/i-NTJ5SqJ/0/XL/2014%2009%2028_0006%20copy-XL.jpg
I really like the 'layers' in this shot! The water, then the buildings then that sky! A wonderful capture, quite silly about that parking though!
