Straining at the Leash

Just as I was about to head out for today's photo, I spotted this duo walking down my street. Now, I absolutely adore dogs and can't resist stopping to pet every pup I encounter. Seeing them come down the street, I was thinking this would be a 2-for-1 opportunity. Pet the pup and get a good photo in the process. The pup, however, had other ideas. Now, when I encounter a dog for the first time, I always watch the owner. They'll give you subtle clues as to how friendly the dog really is. In this case, there was no subtlety needed. The owner wrapped the leash around his wrist, shortened it, and immediately crossed to the opposite side of the street. "Hmmm," thought I. "Perhaps the pup's not so friendly after all." In obvious agreement, the dog started to growl and strain at the leash. Ah, well. At least I got a good photo out of it.
Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, boost black, boost white, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.
Aha, love the smile on the owners face and you have a great system when it comes to checking a dogs personality. It is so true and I just love this capture, caught right in the moment, you never fail to amaze me with your street photography!
At least the guy is hanging. It's more disturbing when the person has an extended leash and is talking on a cell while the dog is growling and trying to get away.
