how old are you? by ltodd

how old are you?

Day 4, and we head due west towards Kenyan schools that are even further inland and closer to the border with Uganda. I had been wondering if these people would ever visit Nairobi, but seeing the roads, and that walking is the key mode of transport, I re-frame my question & wonder if they ever visit Kisii, the largest town in the county that is 20 km away.

This photo is a typical village house-cum-shop. You can see the mud & stick construction exposed on the right side. The young mother with 3 young children is also common in a county where 50% of the population are under 15 years of age.

Life expectancy:
America - 79 years
Australia - 82 years (There is an ongoing program in Australia, working to close the gap in life expectancy for the indigenous population which is regrettably 10 years less than the median.)

If you are born in Kisii county, your life expectancy is just 56 years.
spartan and sobering, yet i think they have happiness as they make the most of what they have and have developed resiiliance

@kali66 I was absolutely amazed by the resilience. There seemed optimism too - an optimism & positivity that even thought things were tough, things would not get worse. It seemed that their levels of stress were much lower than ours in the 'west' - The African way is to not worry for example if you are 2 or 3 hours late for a meeting - one man turned up 24 hours late & was not at all fazed!!

A terrific insight in this photo about life in other countries. What we take for granted is almost chameful in light of this. This looks like a mansion compared to some of the huts I saw. We had chai tea in a mud and dung hut with a tin roof in a Maasai village. We wer told it was the best house in the village because of the roof. All the others had thatched roofs

This image suits black and white so well. Are you going to put together a book of your photos? I think you should do an exhibition!
