Same Subject Challenge Day 3

The name Hanukkah appears on this menorah which I purchased several years ago. It reads from right to left with the Hebrew letters Hey, Nun, Vav, Het and Hey. Although most people call this holiday the Festival of Lights, that is not what the word Hanukkah means! It means "dedication", reminding us that the Temple needed to be rededicated to the L-rd after the Maccabees had cleansed it. Hanukkah menorahs are different from others. While other menorahs have seven branches, the "hanukkiyah" has nine. The ninth candle is used to light the other eight and the menorah is usually placed in or near the front window so that it can serve as a testimony to the miracle which occurred back in the days of the Maccabees. After the candles are lit, a family will usaually sing a song. This song often recognize G-d's power to deliver. The candles are left to burn all the way down and new candles are put in each evening. In more modern times, the exchange of gifts and playing dreidel games have become popular along with traditional holiday foods such as potato latkes. Hanukkah is a fun holiday for the entire family.
Beautiful! I like the variety of colors.
